Praise the presence of Allah SWT who has given His
mercy and grace so that we successfully completed this paper entitled
"PAST PROGRESSIVE". This paper is submitted to meet the task of
English Language 2 that discusses the use of Past Progressive sentences in
everyday life.
Acknowledgment to the supervising lecturer Meriska Yosiana
who has provided motivation and encouragement so that this paper can be solved
well. Thanks also to all the members of the group who have participated in the
preparation of the paper from beginning to end.
Finally, hopefully this paper is useful for us and

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Each language must have rules
or often we call the term grammar of each, as well as with English, a lot of
rules that must be considered in its use, especially in the field of writing.
Therefore, we try to present a paper with the title Past Progressive, from the
many rules of the English language, in addition to fulfilling the tasks of
college also aims hopefully this short article can add our insight about the
English language
1.2 Formulation of Problem
In order for this problem more
directed, then the necessary formulation of the problem. The problems we will
discuss, including:

DISCUSSION
2.1 Definition of Past
Progressive
The general sense of the phrase “Past Continuous Tense” is a phrase that
states events are happening in the past. On the use of the Past Continuous
Tense the verb used must end with -ing /
(verb + ing). The form of time continuous tense using type “TO BE” (was / were).
Was for subject: I, she, he, it.
Were for subject: you, they, we.
Example :
- (+) I was reading book when father watched tv.
(-) I was not reading book when father watched tv.
(?) Was you reading book when father watched tv?
(-?) Was I not reading book when father watched tv?
- (+) The team was running
(-) The team was not running
(?) Was the team running?

2.3 Use of
Past Progressive
A.
Used to pupolarize events that have already begun and
still remain revealed when other events occurred in the past.
- When she came to my house, I was listening the radio.
- I was reading when she met me.
- When he arrived at my house, I was listening the radio.
- She was writing when he met me.

To declare an act or event that is happening in the
past.
- They were studying English all morning last Monday.
- Yudi was watching tv the whole night last Sunday.
- We were practicing dancing all morning last Monday.

2.4 Function
Past Progressive
a. Interrupted
Action in the Past
Past
Continuous is often used to describe an activity that is going on in the past
and stopped by other activities in the past. In a sentence we usually use the
word when to connect between two sentences
Example:
While
we were having the picnic, it started to rain
b. Specific
Time as an Interruption
When
talking about or situations that last for some time, and duration time is
unknown or unimportant.
Example:
I was watching TV yesterday in the
evening.
c. Parallel
Actions
When speaking at the time
of doing two or more activities at the same time. It will use the ‘while’ word
to connect two sentences.
Example:
I was watching TV and Barbara while reading a book.
d. Polite
questions
If
we want to ask polite questions, we can use the past continuous.
Example :
I was wondering if you could open the window.
I was thinking you might help me with
this problem.
e. Repetition
and Irritation with Always
Remember that we can also
express the repetition during someone
or something in the past.
Example:
She was always coming late for dinner!.
